Most of us go through times where we have reached our goals and need to discover new ones that will be worthwhile, challenging and make us feel excited to carry on again. Best of all, these do not necessarily mean shortchanging or ignoring our family and friends. It is hard to go through a downer period while we get inspired to come up with the new ideas that it will take to make us feel life is exciting again. This is also a bit of a dreary time of year with shorter days, poor weather and less sunlight.
Take heart Kyle. We all know you are an eternal optimist or you would have given up on the Leafs years ago!

What it has also done for me is helped lose the "if I do this, then this will happen" mentality.

All I can do is "this or that" I can't know what will happen. It has really helped me be present with my children, who never think of the future, but only live in the present.

An interesting addition to your point on the historical fear of the future... most fear of the future, based on our past experiences, is still completely illogical.

Unless it's something like chronic disease, there's not much in this world that naturally happens over-and-over again that is totally negative experience. Events like hitting a beehive with a stick, going outside in the winter naked, or more serious things like substance abuse or relationship infidelities, which are memorable cause-and-effect scenarios, are all self-induced. We can avoid these things through sensible, Christ-led decisions. Or just "common sense".

I think the fear is really rooted in a perceived lack of control, not experiential survival instincts. Of course, desire for power, even over time itself, is the root human condition, and equals parts lack of power = heightened fear.

Great post Kyle, thanks for getting us to think on this again. Super important to return to often.

Hilarious Sheldon.

Derek, I guess I am trying to go beyond identification and more to what is true about myself. The truth is I do identify with the things you see (what I wear, what you hear me listen to, what i drive), but what are the things you say you identify with, but really don't in real life? Or what are the things that you have an opinion about, but the truth of your opinion is not what you say it is (I don't like hipster clothes) but what you believe in your heart (I don't identify with hipsters).

Jacqui brought me a v neck tee last week. My V neck anything. I experienced something similar to you. I didn't end up outing my underlying 'stuff' but there was some turmoil. I just stuffed the 'i don't want to be a hipster' back in the box.

Next time I'll try and unpack it a little.

obviously I'm joking...
I think this entire culture identifies with fashion, or music, or SOMETHING... we all feel that we have something that defines us, right?
