Dropping Knowledge

Thanks to Pernell at FRWY, who pointed this out to me. It is a collection of ads that should make us all think about social issues.

Homosexuality and the church

Brian Mclaren offers some very good insight into a discussion that has brought with it some very complex and intense emotions. Thanks Leadership Blog for bringing this to my attention.

You won’t get an answer here, but you will be challenged to consider the issue more deeply.

Away for the weekend

Sadly i have to leave my beautiful wife behind and help/attend a college retreat in Mission this weekend. It’s a college retreat put on by our Convention and one of my good friends Paul Johnson is speaking on leadership. Paul blogs a little here.

Also i am getting an opportunity to share a little about our church and teach a little on saturday about something i am passionate about, postmodernism and church culture.

it will be a great time to question, challenge and learn from students as to how our churches must, mustn’t and consider changing. It will be interesting to hear the response of the students, especially when this concept of postmodernism in the church has dragged with it many negative connotations, of which i think aren’t totally justifed. Perhaps this discussion will lead into some further discussion about some more specific topics in the future.

For those of you wondering a little about what this emerging church/postmodern culture conversation is about i recommend reading Emerging Churches by Ryan Bolger and Eddie Gibbs. It is a good overview to a discussion i have been apart of for 3 years.

Where do the politicians come out?

For those of you interested in where each political party comes out, in terms of faith’s role in society and public policy check this out.

It contains responses by all the major parties (and a few independent ones) to the question: “What role do you think faith should play in developing public policy, and what is the place of religious institutions in contemporary Canadian society?”

Filling the Gap

The following is an article/message I gave at a Reach Vancouver Event on January 14th, 2006.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Kyle Martin and I am the lead church planter for the open house church in East Vancouver. The open house is a church plant that just started 3 months ago (October 2005). I church plant with my wife Anna and Kristin Cato who some of you may know. Often as I have embarked in this adventure of church planting, I ask myself…what does this look like? What does a church planter do all day? How do you start a church from a group of three people? What kind of activity should we participate in? (more…)

Hanging in Atlanta

Here’s to the good ol’ city of Atlanta. Where the accents are thicker, the men are bigger and hungrier, and Baptist’s run free like squirrels in Ontario.

Anna and I are here for the next few days attending some interviews for my job as a church planter within the our baptist denomination, which is associated with the American counterpart. It’s nice to have some sun, and time away, although this is a short trip.

I have a couple of big interviews tomorrow that will determine if i get my job that i have already started doing…he he…don’t tell’em.
